Becoming Naomi Leon By: Pam Munoz Ryan

Naomi Soledad Leon Outlaw lives with her grandmother and her brother, Owen in Lemon Tree, California. People tease her for having the funniest name and wearing polyester clothes. Gram always tells Naomi to thiink positive. Naomi loves to do soap carving and making lists. Naomi thinks her biggest problem is her name until her mean mother, Skyla comes back after seven years and tells her to live with her in Las Vegas. Though Skyla only uses her for a babysitter to take care of her ex-husband's daughter. Gram and Skyla now want to go to court someday to see who gets to keep Naomi and Naomi prefers to live with Gram and Owen. Naomi, Owen, and Gram go to Mexico to find Naomi and Owen's father to get a letter proving Skyla didn't let him contact the children. Will they find Naomi and Owen's father or will Naomi have to live with her mom in Las Vegas. I suggest this book for readers in grades 6-8. I like hows there is a animal phrase for every chapter. Other books with the same author are: Esperanza Rising and My Journey to the Night of the Radishes
