Tithe By: Holly Black

Kaye is your average 16-year-old girl who decides to be a rebel, causing her to smoke, drink, and party hard. However, she does have a secret. When she was younger she had friends with faeries, at least, she thought they were faeries. Her friends used to make fun of her, calling her crazy and her faeries only imaginary friends. After Kaye has to move to a new city for her mother's line of work, she discovers a handsome faery knight. She helps him, and then cannot get him off of her mind. When her faery friends come back, she learns that she truly is a faery, and that she must sacrifice herself to save her friends. What she must do next, is an interesting tale, especially with the dark knight involved.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but at times it was hard to follow with some of the descriptions, characters, and plot lines.

I would suggest this book to readers in grades 9-12 since it does have a more mature feel to it, and would be rated R if it was a movie for language, fighting, drinking, smoking, partying, and innuendos.

Twilight

I love to read and when I found out that Twilight won the Flume:NH Teen Readers' Choice Award for best book, I figured I should read it. The main character's name is Isabella Swan, she is a junior in high school attending Forks High School in Forks, Washington State. In Bella's school there is a family of vampires, the Cullens. This family of vampires are very unlike other vampires because they dont drink human blood. In an attempt to be good, they only hunt animals. Bella falls in love with a vampire in the family named Edward. Even though the Cullens drink animal blood, they still have that natural temptation for humans. It it very tempting for Edward to take Bella's life, because it would be so easy too. But he loves her so much he never would. Bella fully realizes the dangers of dating a vampire when her life is on the line with another vampire outside of the Cullen family. The story turns from a love story between Bella and Edward to an intense novel where the Cullens are trying to save Bella's life. At first I thought that Twilight would not be very good because vampires and fantasy do not really interest me. But once I started reading it, what I thought would be boring was just the opposite. Stephenie Meyer writes the book so beautifully that once you pick it up, it is hard to put down. I could easly visualize certain scence in the novel. She is such a creative author and did and outstanding job with her first novel. The theme of Twilight is that decisions come with challenges and possible dangers. The book shows how the power of love can overshadow things, like safety. Bella needs to decide if it is worth being in danger to be with Edward. I definitely recommend this book for people to read. I learned from this book to not judge a book by its cover, because it turned out to be a thousand times better than I thought it would be. Twilight may be a book for fantasy lovers or people who like somewhat of a dark side, but it is also a fantastic book for the rest of people out there, like me.

When they thought they were going to a mysterious house, they ended up in Digory's Uncle Andrew's attic. Uncle Andrew gave Polly a ring, which made her disappear. Then Uncle Andrew had Digory use another one to get her. He also gave him two to bring them back. When Digory used the ring he appeared in another world. It was a forest with a bunch of ponds. He found Polly, but they decided not to go back so soon. So they picked a random pond and went in. They went to one that was in ruins. They then read a passage, and rang a bell. It had awaken a Queen (who was also an evil witch). They then tried to use the rings to escape from her, but she held on to them. They by accident brought her back with them. She then raised chaos in front of Digory's house. After a little while, Digory and Polly brought her back, but also brought the horse she was on, a Cabby, and his Uncle Andrew. They then appeared in an empty world. Which was then being created by Aslan. The Withe then ran off. Aslan then sent him on an errand to grab an apple from a sacred tree. That was with the help from the horse that came along, which now has wings. At the garden he meets up with the Witch, who tries to get him to eat an apple from the tree, and give one to his sick mother. He refused to because the apples were forbidden to be eaten. He then went back to Aslan where the apple was planted to protect Narnia from the Witch. The Cabby and his wife (who was summoned there by Aslan) were proclaimed King and Queen of Narnia. Then Aslan gave Digory one of the apples to give to his sick mother. Digory, Polly, and Uncle Andrew then were sent back home by Aslan. Digory then gave the apple to his mother, and she was then better. He then buried the apple core and all the magical rings. The apples then grew into a tree, which when he was older turned into a wardrobe. My favorite part was when Digory planted a toffee and it grew into a toffee tree. And that anything can be planted, and then it grows into a tree that produces that.

Old Major tells the animals on Manor Farm to rebel against the humans and basically rule themselves. Months after his death, the animals, lead by Snowball and Napoleon rebelled and drove Sones and the other humans off the farm. At first everything went as planned and the animals all worked hard, but were equal nonetheless. It is until Napoleon takes control when things start to change. He has Snowball chased off the farm by his trained dogs and claims that it was he who wanted to build a windmill and not Snowball...

After Snowball is never heard of again Napoleon gradually gets worse. He begins changing the seven amendments so that whatever he does is never against the rules. He also repeatedly reduces the food rations of everyone but the pigs and the dogs. Everyone is basically forced to work like slaves except the pigs... In the end life becomes just as bad as before if not worse. The pigs begin to act more and more like humans and the old commandments are even removed.

Favorite Part: When Benjamin notices that instead of taking Boxer to a hospital, Napoleon in reality sent him to the slaughter house; so all the animals' try to save Boxer's life. I think this is an example of love and devotion to a loved comrade.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows By: J.K. Rowling

This is the seventh and final installment in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and, in my opinion, the best. Harry is left a mission by Dumbledore to destroy all of Voldemort's horcruxes, pieces of souls, that are in items such as lockets, cups and even animals. After destroying these, Harry must duel Lord Voldemort, the Dark Lord, to the death. My favorite part of the book was at the end when Harry was at Hogwarts and the entire school was fighting a huge battle. If you want to know the outcome, read the book. I'd reccommend this book for fantasy and magic lovers age 11 and up.

Percy Jackson And the Olympians, Book 5: The Last Olympian

Percy Jackson And The Olympians, Book 5: The last Olympians

Author: Rick Riordan

Plot Summary: The Last Olympians is the fifth and final book in the Percy Jackson series. The war against the Titans is in full swing and is almost the whole book. It has the return of Thalia and the huntresses, and they are a fundamental part in the war. This book has less humor than the others and is much more serious than the others. It is full of surprises, even more than usual. It also has a few character deaths which is very un-Percy Jackson like. The war is very well portrayed unlike in most novels where it is over in three chapters and just straight fighting the whole time. It is in my opinion, the best of the series.

Favorite part: My favorite part is towards the end where Annabeth is talking to Luke, when Athena tells Percy to stay away from Annabeth, and the very ending when Percy and Camp Half-Blood.

Pro's and con's: I like the more serious tone of the book. I do like the humor in the previous books, but with the war it is better without as much humor. I also like the fact that they used Sally and Paul more. I'm still not that fond of Rachel and I don't think they should use her as much, but it is an overall great book.

Other books by this author: the Percy Jackson series, 39 Clues, Book 1: the Maze Of Bones

It starts off with her and her man servant Coram riding into the hill country. She has just won her shield and was off roaming the southern land in search of adventure! {and warm weather, she hates the cold}, then while her and Coram are resting at an oasis. They are suddenly attacked be Hillman which is like bandits of the dessert. In the fight her sword lightening is broken and they are assisted be a tribe of Bazhir who are dessert dweller’s and not always friendly. This group of people does not see the king of Tortall as their king, but do not kill them out right because they think she is the Burning Brightly One {which she is}. Which is a legend to them and also they have the same enemy {the Hillman}, they extend an invitation to her to come to their camp and she can’t refuse. There she is ranted at by their shaman how she is a devil and shouldn’t act like a man but there leader is fair. They decide she should fight for her right to be here, she may be a good knight but will she survive this trial. This is a good book in the series but seemed less engaging somehow? You can tell who they are by the difference of color in their eyes. The graced are often excluded from normal society, but a woman with the grace to kill? Unheard of. In the medieval lands of The Seven Kingdoms Katsa was graced with the ability to kill. King Randa uses her as his own personal thug to intimidate the other kingdoms. But after a strange encounter with Prince Po, Katsa questions whether she can brake loss from this role she has been forced into. Meanwhile a mysterious kidnapping unfolds a series a events that will forever change both Po and Katsa...and possibly the people of several kingdoms.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I would probably rate this book as a 7 or 8. It was interesting to imagine the world that Katsa lives in, but at the same time the middle dragged a bit. I should warn all of those out there that it does have some romance, which was actually a nice break from the seriousness of some pretty heavy images of fightings and killings. I can imagine that A LOT of you out there are Hunger Games fans and I can also imagine how the name of the protaganist throws you off. Trust me, I was feeling the same way. It's also a little strange how closely the characters match up to each other, strong, independent women, looking for a way to survive and protect the people that they love.
If you are looking for a nice easy read for the summer, with some adventures then I most certainly recommend this.

I loved the first half of Captivate, but the rest was weird and a little annoying to me. its the second book in a series, the first one is Need. it is about Pixies, and were-creatures. the main charecter in Zara, her boyfriend is a werewolf, her grandmother is a weretiger, and her friend is a wereeagle. she is also half pixie. Zara normally would have nothing to do with the pixies but then her boyfriends life is jepordized. She is the reason everything is happening, so she will do everything to save everyone.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

When farmer boy Eragon discovers a blue stone in the woods while hunting, he takes it home in hopes to sell it for food. But when the stone hatches, he realizes that it was actually a dragon egg! He is thrust into a world of adventure, terror, and confusion as he discovers, with the help of a freind named Brom, that he is to be the first of the new Dragon Riders! The evil king Galbatorix catches wind of these events and sends his most fearsome soldiers to hunt down Eragon. The fantasy story builds up to a terrific battle climax and is extremely well written. Also, the author wrote the book at age fifteen! I highly recommend this book. Grades 6 and up. (You can try it at any age if you are adventurous enough, though)

Percy Jackson & The Olympians, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the series "Percy Jackson & The Olympians". It is about a boy named Percy who is a half- blood and the son of Poseidon. Someone stole the lightning bolt of Zeus (the god of the sky) and blamed it on Percy. So Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover set out on a quest to find the lightning bolt. They have to return the bolt before the summer solstice or they will be a war. Along the way they run into other gods who try to stop them from finding the bolt. I really liked the book because it was very interesting and I was really eager to read it. I would recommend this book to people who like fiction and who like to read books about gods. The Gate of Days by Guillaume Prevost

In this second book in the Book of Time series, Sam is back on the quest for his Dad who is stuck in the time of Vlad Tepes, the model of Dracula. In order to get to that time period, fhe must find more coins that will work with the sn statue that allows him to time travel. With the help of his cousin Lilly, he travels into the Neanderthal age, eruption day of Mt. Vesuvius, and the time of the Great Depression in Chicago. All the while someone by the name of Arkeos is trying to kill him. Will Sam be able to get to the time of his father and save him? Prevost has a good sense of sarcastic humor and a good adventurous writing style which keeps you very well entertained. The concept of traveling through time can be confusing at times, so it is probably best suited for Jr. High and up. Very well written!!!

The Circle of Gold by Guillaume Prevost

" In the finale of the Book of Time series, Sam follows orders from the Arkeos man who has kidnapped his wanna-be girlfriend, Alicia, to retrieve an ancient book and return it to his accomplice during the fall of Rome in 1527. Oh his way there Sam finds out that the evil Arkeos man is actually his Aunt's new boyfriend, and he discovers the secret of slowing time which allows him to get the book. Once Sam has Alicia he quickly leaves Rome and they arrive in...the future. Sam must get them back to his current time then travel to the day his mother died in the hopes of saving her and his father.
The time traveling in this book is a lot more confusing than the other two books, and even I sometimes had a hard 'time' understanding it. This book definately grasps and holds your attention, and it will probably be one you'll want to read more than once. The thing I liked most about this book is that none of it was expectable and that you were never sure what was going to happen."

The Sledding Hill by Chris Crutcher

I like the book because they have italics sometimes when Billy the ghost talks to Eddie, his human friend. Readers might like this book if they like to know what happens after you die. The book talks about Eddie and Billy being best friends, but Billy and his father die. Eddie misses them, and he doesn't talk for a while. But he has to speak up for a bad book that is gonna be banned from school. Soon the book does get banned, and the author of the bad book, Chris Crutcher, doesn't write bad words in his books anymore.

Eldest by Christopher Paolini

In the second book in the Inheritance trilogy, Eragon travels to Du Weldenvarden to train to be a Rider with the Elves. Oromis the elf and Glaedr his dragon teach Eragon and Saphira to extend their powers to new levels. Unforunatley, Eragon has to leave abruptly to save the Varden in a coming battle with King Galbatorix's army. Meanwhile, the story follows Roran, Eragon's cousin, through deadly trials in Carvahall. The Ra'zac mount a small-scale invasion on Roran and the other villagers, but Roran leads them to victory. Furious, the Ra'zac storm the village at night and capture Katrina, Roran's wife-to-be, after moratlly wounding Roran. Through his fierce determination to rescue Katrina, Roran survives his wounds. Grim determination lends Roran incredible eloquence as he somehow convinces the villagers to leave their homes and follow him through the treacherous mountains on a quest of vengeance. They face soldiers, guards, starvation, and storms at sea as they relentlessly hunt down the Ra'zac and Katrina. The book builds to an incredible battle against Galbatorix in which Roran routs the Twins, who had betrayed the Varden. Eragon also discovered that Murtagh survived and had been forced into Galbatorix's service once one of the remaining dragon eggs hatch for him. Eragon is defeated by Murtagh, who was trained by Galbatorix himself, although Murtagh had enough compassion on his once friend and ally to spare him. Paolini leaves off at a somewhat depressing point in the story for Eragon, but it is very well written and ends better than I've described it here. I highly recommend this book, but make sure you've read the first one before you read this one. Recommended for junior high and high school.

"All the Sabrina books I have read this one is right next to the best. I recommend this book to a girl to read, because it has some action and romance and love. The book itself is nonfiction, because it has a teenage witch in it. The book is one of many series , but you do not have to follow them in any order. It is a great summer read.

Roswell High, Book 4: The Watcher by Melinda Mets

Roswell High is a book series about the aliens that came to earth during the Roswell Crash. They were put into incubation so they are only teenagers. There is three of them. Isabelle and Max, who got adopted together, and Michael, who got adopted separately and do an abusive father. There is a top-secret organization know as PCS, or Project Clean Slate. It is run by Sheriff Valenti who is the father of Kyle who used to date Liz, one of the humans who know about Isabelle's, Max's, and Michael's secret. Liz used to date Max, but he is now trying to push her away because he fears he might hurt her when he leaves for his home planet, the ultimate goal for the four aliens. Isabelle is now dating Alex, another human who is aware of their secret, even though she longs for Michael. Michael is confused about who he wants. He cannot decide between Maria, the only other human who knows their secret and his childhood friend, and Isabelle another alien. In this book Max is dying. The aliens and the humans who know their secret must band together to get to the base of Project Clean Slate and get the crystals necessary for him to survive, cue to an alien thing that causes him to connect, emotionally, to everyone from his home planet, Antar. I liked pretty much all of it, besides the fact that it varies so much from the television show, although the television show did not come out until after the book series had finished. Anyone who likes romance, mystery, action, sci-fi, or a mix of the four will like this book. The other Roswell High book titles are: The Outsider, The Wild One, The Seeker, The Intruder, The Stowaway, The Vanished, The Rebel, The Dark One, and The Salvation.
