Have you ever needed an answer to a legal question? Not a US Supreme Court caliber legal question, just one of those questions which you thought would be so simple to answer. Questions like these for instance:
How can I be sure my will is legal if I write it myself?
I have a great idea for a new book mark. How can I be sure no one else has already had this idea? How can I be sure I get the credit for my idea?
Is it all right if I cut the branches on my neighbor's tree that are hanging over my fence?
I don't agree that I was speeding. What can I do about it?
A good place to start looking for the answers to questions like this and others is your library. Nashua Public Library has a large number of resources for answering legal questions. Some of our resources are in print, both circulating books and reference books which do not circulate. Some resources are online, both free and for a fee. In this, and subsequent blogs, I'm going to discuss the different areas of the law that you might need to research, and which of the libraries resources would best meet your needs.
The answers to legal questions are found in a number of places depending on what agency or governing body might be involved in the question. If your question involves something local, you will want to look for answers in the Code of the City of Nashua. This large reference book contains "all currently effective ordinances of a general and permanent nature enacted by the City Council of the City of Nashua". It is located in the city government alcove in the Business department. An index in the back of the book makes it easy to search and user friendly.
The ordinances are also available online through the website for the City of Nashua. This link gives access to the most recent revisions which have been made in city ordinances. All of the ordinances concerning city government can be found in the Code of the City of Nashua, either in print or online, including those dealing with elections and campaigns for city offices. The city charter is also available here.
